Statement from Troutman Police Chief on Iredell-Statesville School Obscenity Complaint

“The Troutman Police Department was asked by Iredell-Statesville Schools officials to investigate what was alleged to be an incident of disseminating obscenity during the school board meeting that occurred on 01/08/2024. The report was forwarded to an investigator with the Criminal Investigations Unit who reviewed the allegations and the video recording of the meeting. The investigator did not feel that Mrs. Mimnaugh’s reading from a book available through the Iredell County Public Library met the elements of the crime of disseminating obscenities. The investigator referred his findings to the Iredell County District Attorney, Sarah Kirkman. Ms. Kirkman stated to the investigator that she would need to do extensive research before making a decision on whether to seek prosecution or not in this incident. The department made contact with Mrs. Mimnaugh and explained the status of the case to ensure that she had the facts from our agency and was not unduly concerned by comments on social media sites or media sources that may not be reporting all the facts of the case.

The Troutman Police Department’s priority is ensure that this investigation has been conducted in a fair manner based solely upon the facts and the law without being influenced by any parties’ opinions or agenda. The Troutman Police Department will always ensure to uphold the rights of all people as enshrined in the United States Constitution. “
